MORTAR BEDS & SHOWER pANS
The Seemingly Lost Art Of The Mud Floor
Long before tile is set, the structure beneath it has to be right. Hamptons Tile & Stone builds mortar beds, shower pans and substrate assemblies that create the foundation for a properly functioning finished installation.
Slope, flatness, drainage, transitions, and support all matter. Whether the project calls for a traditional mortar bed, a custom shower base or correction of uneven substrate, the work below the surface directly affects how the tile above performs and looks.
A beautiful finish begins with a properly built base.
01
Built around the actual conditions.
Every project presents different conditions. Floors may be out of level. Walls may not be square. Existing elevations may not line up cleanly. Shower drains, thresholds and adjoining surfaces can all affect the finished installation.
Mud work allows the substrate to be built around those realities. Rather than forcing a prefabricated component into the space, the installer can establish the surface, slope and elevation the finished installation actually requires.
02
Control where it matters.
Traditional mortar beds provide precise control over flatness and plane, finished floor elevation, shower pitch and drainage, transitions between adjoining surfaces, finished dimensions and corrections for irregular existing conditions.
The result is a substrate built specifically for the tile and stone installation that will sit on top of it.
03
Traditional skill. Modern systems.
Modern installation systems absolutely have their place, and Hamptons Tile & Stone uses them when they are appropriate for the project. But those systems do not replace the knowledge required to build a floor, shower pan, slope or substrate from scratch. Understanding traditional mud work gives the installer another level of control — and another way to solve conditions that cannot always be addressed properly with an off-the-shelf system.
04
The foundation comes first.
The finished tile is what everyone sees. The quality of the installation often depends on what no one sees. When a project calls for it, Hamptons Tile & Stone retains the craftsmanship and experience to build that foundation properly.
Built right beneath the surface.
